Dear business partners,

today, I am excited to introduce our new Medicon CadLab Course "Daily spine ...but fine!".
This course is specifically designed for minimal invasive disc herniations and stenosis treatment at the lumbar and cervical level. At the core of this course is the central idea of "paying attention to details".
We have gathered a team of distinguished experts to enhance the expertise of Ortho, Spine and Neuro Surgeons. Led by Prof. Dr. med. Luca Papavero, Dr. med. Markus Pietrek and Dr. med. Nawar Ali from Schoen Clinic Hamburg Eilbek, this course offers an incredible opportunity for surgeons to empower themselves with enhanced techniques, refined skills, and a fresh perspective. By participating in this course, we believe that surgeons can significantly improve patient outcomes.

For more information on the course program, please refer to the detailed information in the section below.

In addition to our new course, I would like to draw your attention to our M·A·P·N system for lumbar and intervertebral disc surgery. You may already be familiar with the system itself, but we have found that sometimes there is a need for a wider trocar sleeve and therefore a larger working channel.
Since we already have further possibilities within our product line, I would like to present all available options below.

There were also some general updates regarding the MDR Regulation. I would like to give you a brief insight into the current status and what this means for us as a medical technology provider.

I wish you a pleasant time and hope to meet you in person again soon if the opportunity arises.

MAPN Overview

M·A·P·N

Lumbar and intervertebral disc surgery is one of the most common procedure in the field of Neurosurgery and Orthopaedics. With an incidence rate of 87 per 100.000 inhabitants per year in Germany it requires procedures that, on the one hand, afford extensive, qualitative safety during surgery and, on the other hand, keep access-related trauma to a minimum, thus promoting rapid patient rehabilitation.
The open intervertebral disc procedure was replaced in the 1970s by the microsurgical technique. The clear advantage of this method is the smaller access required and the excellent visulaisation of the surgical field using a surgical microscope.

With the Medicon M-A-P-N system, a less invasive variant of access to all other levels of the posterior spine is possible.
While the trocar sleeves with a radius size of 11mm, 14mm and 18mm are commonly known, there are also trocar sleeves with a radius size of 22mm and 24mm
This variation offers the surgeon the possibility to decide for each operation which size of working channel is needed to perform the surgical steps correctly and comfortably.

Extension of the MDR and its significance for Medicon eG

The MDR (Medical Device Regulation) has affected us as a medical technology company for several years now. This regulation, passed by the European Parliament and the Council in 2017, aims to enhance the legal framework for medical devices and in-vitro diagnostics. The implementation of these regulations will apply from May 2021 and from May 2024 for medical devices certified under the old legal regime.

Due to several serious events, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, disruptions in global supply chains and other events, there is a risk of shortages of life-saving medical devices. To address this concern, in January of this year, the EU Commission proposed an extension of the MDR implementation deadline.

This request for an extension has now been granted. The duration of the extension depends on the risk class of the medical device and can apply until December 2028 at the latest.

You can find more information on the applicable transition periods here:

We, as Medicon eG, are grateful for these transition periods as they provide us with additional time to comply with the new regulations. Nevertheless, we remain committed to adapting our product range promptly and ensuring clarity for our partners and customers regarding the products that will continue to be available in our portfolio.
